WATER REFLECTIONS: THE LIGHT BOX

THE MORPHOLOGY OF LIGHT AS A SPECTACLE

PROF. GIOVANNI TRAVERSO

*IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MARUT ANGSURATANAWECH

This project is an analytical study of natural light. The idea was to take a the proportional dimensions of a shoebox and use these dimensions as a constraint to build a light box. The project took place in Vicenza, Italy. We were to utilizing the sun path of this place to design a light box with the existing light parameters of the region. The initial idea was the poetic notion of bouncing light rather than capturing it. We took it upon ourselves to design a box that would be suspended over a series of trays that would be filled with water. These trays were made of aluminum and filled with water 2/3 of the way. The reflectivity of the material, combined with the water allowed for light to bounce off the water, captured by a series of light wells that were strategically designed based on the sun angle and time of day. If this wasn’t enough we were inspired by the canals of Venice, Italy. So we wanted to recreate these moving water reflection inside the internal space.  So we implemented the use of wind to move the water  in the trays to recreate the beautiful phenomenon of moving light.
