THE URBAN CHAPEL

MASTERS RESEARCH PROJECT (MRP)

PROF. ALFONSO PEREZ-MENDEZ & LISA HUANG

The study begins with analytical drawings for 15 important precedents located worldwide. The idea is to systematically explore the interrelations between structure, ornament, light, form, and space; and to apply these conclusions to the climate and conditions of contemporary south Florida. Many critical issues have arisen in the process, such as the degree of enclosure, opacity versus transparency, and the development of roof and structure that merit investigation through diagrams that explore the negotiation between the interior and exterior through architectural means.

The chapel drawing materializes as a diagrammatic exploration of the architecture through an exploded axonometric that includes all essential architectural elements, and a plan displaying the relationship of people with the altar. This hybrid drawing is accompanied by the simple manifestation of plans and sectional diagrams that show the termination of sacred ground through form and structure in very concise analytical ideas. These drawings demonstrate the degree of enclosure, how the architecture creates a real or irreal experience through the filtering of light, and the materialization of the ground plane. The analysis of these 15 case studies establishes a theoretical precedent for the final Chapel project. The methodology is to construct a chapel based on the core principles of structure, ornament, and light. The chapel is located within the dense urban context in Miami, FL Brickell neighborhood.
