THE EXTRUDED SPINE
LIGHT MODULATOR
PROF. ALFONSO PEREZ-MENDEZ
The interpolation of the light modulator was derived from the extrapolation of the human spinal cavity. From the conceptual study of the spine in a cross section, a cut was derived and modulated. The conceptual analysis of the human spine inspired the design of the light modulator to mimic the rhythm in space and movement. The idea was to play with differences in transparency and opacity to control light through the movement of the device changing the degree of light, form and space. The musicality of the chain is its ability and flexibility to function like a spine. The chain like module is the core and the essence of the light modulator which acts as the primary structural component and the link between the pleated brick pattern. This aesthetically designed undulation allowed for the serpentine motion to occur consistently throughout the modular surface. The secondary extruded link interlocks all modules together and allows for movement in a cohesive manner while maintaining its order.
