NATHAN BENDERSON ROWING FACILITY, HYRDOLOGIC

THE ART OF MOVING WATER

PROF. WILLIAM L. TILSON

The Nathan Benderson Rowing Facility is a compositional sequence of events across a selected territory in Sarasota, Florida. It comprises of a starting tower, alignment hut, three timing huts and a finishing tower. The extremity of the design was to find resolution defined by convention and invention. The challenge was not to design by convention, but to invent through fluidity by formulating a strategy and embracing the surrounding edge condition. The conceptual idea of hydrology was manifested throughout the project from the timing huts all the way to the finishing tower. Rowing is a very strenuous and demanding sport both physically and mentally. The physical act of rowing was the phenomenon that inspired this project. I studied the movement of water carefully to understand the rhythmic process of penetration. The rowers struck the ore across the water continuously; this created a symphonic rhythm that was repeated. The insertion of the tower and the huts became a carefully grafted process that gently embedded itself in the ground addressing the edge condition. This act drove the formal constraint of the proposal to where it is now, but understanding these forms while providing a series of views of the entire lake was the intent. The conceptual idea for the finishing tower was to maximize views while providing views down the entire course. This was achieved by the twisting motion of the tower allowing for clearer views.
