REEF SHELTER

TRANSIT NODE

PROF. LEE-SU HUANG

This transit node is located in Gainesville, FL. The main concept of the RTS transit shelter incorporates the idea of the coral reef duplicated to establish  a biomimetic architecture. The idea is to provide a weather proof shelter for the people, while designing the architecture to be aesthetically pleasing and functional. The paneled skin allows for light perforations that would illuminate the shelter with natural light. As seen in the drawings the transit shelter decomposes as the design reaches the edges, this is an intentional design strategy that allows a series of ribs to be connected to the main structure. These ribs can be used to lock you bicycles, and work as a dual function that can be an extension for available seating when needed. The idea of materiality is considered to be equally important, thus the use of copper. The copper is used strategically to show a rustic aged patina in the design. The occupant can then have direct  interaction with the architecture providing a multi sensory experience for the transit node.
