ORIGIN 8 VESSEL SHOWROOM

SEMPERIAN PAVILION

PROF. ALFONSO PEREZ-MENDEZ

The Origin 8 Vessel is located in the neighborhood of Hells Kitchen in Manhattan situated on the roof top of 341 West 45th street. This location was picked strategically because of the uninterrupted views that it has of the Manhattan skyline. The site is crucial as the idea of the project is based on providing 360 degree views of the Manhattan skyline to the occupant. The bicycle industry is fast expanding in the city of New York, more people are seeking alternative  methods of transportation. This is why the program of the pavilion is a bicycle gallery for the Origin 8 bicycle company, that makes top of the line bikes. This exhibit is meant to display the power of alternative methods in transportation. The idea for the pavilion was derived from the principle of the bike frame, the triangular form of the bike frame was extruded to make a truss. This truss skin acts as an inverted structural skin that is suspended off the internal column grid. The organic columns within the pavilion hold the roof, and anchor the pavilion to the existing building. These forms are not only aesthetically pleasing to the occupant, but act as structural gesture that dominates the interior of the space. The internal row of truss columns hold up the exterior envelope, while also providing room for the bike exhibits. Potentially the bikes would be suspended by a pulley system that is then anchored to both the truss and the ground. The nature of holding is carried throughout the project, this phenomenon embodies the foundation of semperian principles for the pavilion.
