CRYSTALS OF LIGHT

LUMINAIRE

PROF. THOMAS SMITH

The Luminaire proposal was intended for a residential unit in a high rise hybrid tower in Midtown Manhattan in New York, New York. Based on the diffused light quality of the night sky, and the twinkling lights from nearby office towers the shade surrounding the lamp was designed to imitate this intermittent quality. The materials used were acrylic and aluminum; unfortunately they lend themselves to glare. In order to control glare from the materials of choice, salt crystals were introduced to diffuse lighting and control the amount of light that would be emitted from the Luminaire. The salt crystals were an inspiration of which certain factors in the design were taken into account in order to facilitate the alteration of light if needed depending on the setting. There are small grooves cut out into the acrylic towards the top in order to allow the redistribution of crystals if needed to alter the light conditions in the place dwelling.
